[ more › ] A man being held on murder charges at the Rikers Island jail complex died early Monday morning after what appeared to be an allergic reaction, according to Department of Correction officials.. The department said Kyron Randall, 33, was transferred from Rikers’ George R. Vierno Center to Elmhurst Hospital around 12:10 p.m Sunday. Doctors attempted to provide life-saving care, but he was pronounced dead shortly before 1 a.m., according to the department.. The correction department said no official cause of death has yet been determined, and so far no staff has been disciplined in the incident. Correction Commissioner Lynelle Maginley-Liddie said in a statement Randall’s death would be “thoroughly investigated,” and expressed condolences to Randall’s family.. Department officials said they had notified the federal monitor that oversees Rikers, the Board of Correction, the state Attorney General’s Office, the city Department of Investigation, the state Commission of Correction, the city Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, the city’s district attorneys and Randall’s lawyer.. Correction department records show Randall had been held at the George R. Vierno Center since July 2, 2024. Court records show he was arrested more than a year earlier, charged with beating his roommate to death at a drug rehab facility in the Bronx. His attorney did not immediately respond to a message.. He is the 15th person to die this year at the troubled city jail, or while in medical care shortly after being released from custody, according to reports compiled by Gothamist. Aramis Furse, 32, died earlier this month at the Otis Bantum Correction Center after he appeared to be unwell in his cell, officials said.. This is a developing story and has been updated based on further information from city officials.
